Today, more than 820 million people regularly go to bed hungry, of whom about 135 million suffer from acute hunger. The number has spiked mainly due to the recession caused by the pandemic, and other reasons includes man-made conflicts and climate change. With more than a quarter of a billion people potentially at the brink of starvation, swift action needs to be taken to provide food and humanitarian relief to the most at-risk regions. More than 700 million people, or 10% of the world population, still live in extreme poverty. Surviving on less than US$1.90 a day.
The Global Report on Food Crises 2020, estimates that 135 million people in 55 countries currently face acute hunger.
