This World Orphans Day, You Can Change Lives

The purpose of World Orphans Day on 20th April is “to raise awareness and provide a common platform for orphans and underprivileged children all over the world.”

Below, read about the incredible impact of Global Ehsan Relief’s Orphan and Hifz Orphan Sponsorship program on the lives of orphans in Aceh, Indonesia. We talked to two important individuals; Intan Maulida, the General Manager of Global Ehsan Relief Indonesia and Mursyidin, an Orphan Mentor.

Your Orphan Sponsorship Changes Lives

“In the beginning, we started with 25 orphans for our Care for Orphans program here in Aceh, Indonesia. But Alhamdulillah at the moment, we have almost 700 orphans in several provinces in Indonesia,” Intan Maulida shared.

“Over time, we learned the success of this program lies not only on the children, but also the impact it has on their families as a whole.”

“To give a bigger picture, our Care for Orphans program here in Indonesia consists of two categories. The first is a scholarship for tahfiz orphans, i.e. those who study at a tahfiz school or study tahfiz outside of school. The second one is for regular children.”

“The purpose is for us to have monthly monitoring every month, so that our monitoring is more directed and measured for these children. Hence we have a separate curriculum. In addition, we also support the orphans’ parents with various skills training activities. Alhamdulillah with all the activities listed in the curriculum, the impact is very big on the lives of these children.”

“Most of our sponsored children are very enthusiastic when going through this project and they are able to excel in society. Before our sponsorship, perhaps they used to be just normal school kids who didn’t feel confident about being able to continue their education. But alhamdulillah right now, some of our sponsored orphans have won Qur’an recitation competitions, as well as excelling in normal curriculum like science.”

“Here at Global Ehsan Relief, we believe that when we intend to help a family, we should help the whole family, not just the children. For instance, other than providing scholarships for the children, we also have livelihood programs for the widowed mothers.

The Hard Work and Dedication of our Orphan Mentors

Mursyidin (second from left), 33, is the Orphan Mentor for Cluster 1, Aceh Besar. He has 24 sponsored orphans under him.

“As an Orphan Mentor, we meet the orphans every week to guide their memorisation of the Al-Qur’an and the method of reading the Al-Qur’an properly and correctly. We do it once a week, four times a month.”

“Alhamdulillah, I feel proud and satisfied because these are the efforts that we have given. I’m proud to know that the guidance we have given so far has yielded maximum results. Alhamdulillah even though only a handful of people have memorised 5, 10 juz, we are still proud of everyone’s achievements.”

“Many of these children come from a disadvantaged background. Their parents do not have regular jobs with stable incomes. Some are farmers, while most widowed mothers are working as domestic helpers.”

“None of these children are actually lazy to study, but most of the time, they are forced to drop out of school because there is no one to help finance their education. So through our Orphan and Hifz Orphan Sponsorship programs, these children are able to continue their education.”

“And for these children, despite not being able to have education initially, they have a fire in them to want to change, wanting to help their parents. Some of our orphans have ambitions of being teachers, police officers, soldiers, pilots and so on.”

“These children still have hope, they have big dreams and most are striving hard to be a Hafiz of the Qur’an. That is extraordinary and it is very worthy of our help, because the ambition is very high.”

“My hope for the children that we are guiding, is firstly for the tahfiz children to be able to finish as soon as possible because the opportunity for those who are Hafiz to continue their education is very high and they are able to secure scholarships anywhere.”

“I have high hopes and expectations for our sponsored orphans, just like the hopes of their parents – our widowed mothers. The hope that these children can become great children and benefit our people, religion and country. InsyaAllah.”
